SOW #1-51
REALLY want to catch up? Want to see what has already been assigned? The first 51 weeks of SOW ran from 11/18/07-10/26/08. Here is a list of those assignments:
1. Present an “old” recording as a way of introduction. Anything will do, and it mustn’t have been made specifically for SOW.
2. Create a “Z Side” to SOW #1. Imagine the least likely companion piece to your submission for SOW #1 and make it.
3. Make a piece of music using only 5 notes.
4. Use only your body (i.e., voice, handclaps are acceptable; instruments, hands hitting a table are not).
5. Make a dedication to something.
6.Gather a field recording, then use it prominently in your piece.
7. Make an original lullaby, singing in your own voice.
8. Make a piece for the New Year OR about your favorite animal.
9. Be literary.
10. Make 2 simple one track recordings, between 15 seconds and 2 minutes in length. Trade them with somebody who has done the same, and then use their tracks as the basis of your piece.
11. Cover the Slayer song “Dead Skin Mask”.
12. Make a dance tune.
13. Make a sountrack to this short film: odyssey
14. Record an anthem
15. Revisit an earlier SOW piece of your own in some fashion (i.e., remixing, adding to, rerecording, etc).
16. Make a piece utilizing an extreme tempo change.
17. Record a piece live in front of an audience.
18. Make the soundtrack to your favorite color.
19. Record an original hymn.
20. Make a piece of exactly 20 seconds in length.
21. Record an instrumental piece with at least 8 tracks with the theme of “camp” or “campfire”.
22. Make a recording of a sibilant quality that could potentially be a hit.
23. Rip audio from youtube, and combine it with a nontraditional or homemade instrument.
24. Make a piece using ONLY 2 voices (i.e., guitar, strings, vocals, etc.) in your most hated genre.
25. Make a piece that answers at least 2 of the following questions: Does life suck or is it great? What are you wearing and why? Who is to blame? Where is your next meal coming from? What exactly did _______ say to dissuade you?
26. Take another stab at an earlier SOW assignment.
27. Attempt a recording of a holophonic kind.
28. Record an interview.
29. Pick a song you used to sing, but HAVE NOT sang at any point in the last 10 years. Record a new version.
30. Use a breakbeat.
31. Record the sound of two hearts breaking.
32. Be political.
33. Make a recording that does not use equal temperament.
34. What does your house sound like?
35. Make a recording that is either oppressive or joyful, depending on your current outlook.
36. Make a new wedding or funeral march.
37. Make a recording in your shower.
38. Make a cover of a previous piece by another SOW member.
39. Make another live recording in front of an audience.
40. Sing in the highest register possible with your voice.
41. Make the sounds of a music box or Pandora’s Box.
42. Use short, sharp sounds.
43. Make a piece dedicated to the cosmos.
44. Make a piece about a sexual encounter with a police officer.
45. Utilize a famous recording that is not your own (i.e., MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”) and, without altering the recording, layer at least 3 tracks on top of it.
46. Approach a person close to you and ask them what, given the choice, they would have you record. That is your assignment.
47. Make sounds to soothe a sleeping baby.
48. Make a song utilizing a 1950’s popular style with an aggressive edge.
49. One word: Blood.
50. One word: Monster.
51. One word: Death.
